No Batteries

At the heart of the AEON brand promise, and our watches, is our use of automatic movements. In the watch world there’s 4 main groups of movements that watches fall under - automatic, mechanical, quartz, and digital.

The first two are pure mechanical engineering, no wires, circuits, or batteries required. With these micro-engineering masteries comes interesting side-effects such as a clean sweep of the second hand and gracefully moving inner components. Mechanical watches are similar to automatic watches, yet that lack the perpetual rotor that winds the watch with the movement of your wrist, instead relying on a manual wind of the watch every few days.

Inside the automatic movement

Within the automatic movement in each AEON watch are several key components that allow the watch to function without batteries or constant winding.

  • Free-Swinging Rotor - uses the movement of your wrist to wind the watch.

  • Motion Train - the collective term for the chain of gears that make up the overall movement. This is where you’ll find the components responsible for keeping track of minutes and hours.

  • The Power Unit - energy is stored here in the form of a main spring that is perpetually released by the motion train.

  • The Escapement - tempers the unrestrained movement of the gear train, creating a consistent rhythm of movement.

  • The Balance Wheel - spins rapidly, determining the frequency at which the watch oscillates. Think circular pendulum. *

Into the future

It’s this concept of relying on physics, gears, and kinetic energy to make your watch tick, that we believe gives our watches the enteral spirit we strive to capture. With proper care and maintenance, an automatic watch will continue ticking its way long into the future without the interchanging of parts or constant human intervention.
